Themed list: Afterlife
Posted on September 1, 2007
Filed Under HP themed lists |
What I take:
1) Ghost stories:
- where one of the characters has an affair with a canon ghost (Peeves, Bloody Baron, Nearly Headless Nick, Myrtle, other);
- where a character becomes a ghost after his/her death;
- if a story is solely about canon ghosts.2) Afterlife in Limbo, Hell, Paradise/Eden/Elysium (or whatever their analogue writers can invent); here also go stories with different kinds of use of the Veil;
3) Living as a magical portrait (or statue). I also accept stories where it happens not after death, but only if a character actually exists as a portrait, not just was portrayed.
4) Any other afterlife experience.
Won’t do:
- just character death;
- stories where a character’s afterlife/otherworld experience is mentioned but not described;
- when a canon ghost is NOT in a relationship with the main character. For example, if the pair is Harry/Snape and one of the ghosts helps Harry to get to Snape, such a story won’t fit. Also will fit neither Invisible to See (link to the Introduction, to read further push the ‘next entry’ button) by Pandarus, in spite of the fact that Hogwarts ghosts’ plot is the main detail there). Nor ch. 6 of Origins by Ivy Blossom where there’s ghosts’ light show.
- necrophila fiction goes to a separate list;
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are.
Special marks:
# - liked
## - loved
NR - have not read
new - added in the last month or so
Fics are re-sorted in alphabetical order by TITLE (excluding articles).
These are NOT my recs, this is just a source.
The list is divided into four sections:
1. Ghosts, which, in its turn, is divided into three more groups of stories:
a) Main story character as a ghost;
b) Canon ghosts + main story character;
c) Minor story character as a ghost.
2. Limbo, etc: afterlife in Limbo, Hell, Paradise/Eden/Elysium (or whatever else); communications through the Veil and life behind it.
4. Other.
a) Main story character as a ghost

A Thousand Words, by Bernice (iibnf) #
PG-13; Gen; Snape-centric. On a sunny day, Snape wanders the grounds. Not telling what happens, just believe me it fits perfectly.
Truck-Driving with the Dead, by Hijja (or here)
Gen, PG-13, ~7200 words. Warning(s): some potentially disturbing content, a touch of het. Summary: Isn’t it weird how joy can have you almost come apart just when things are at their most perfect?
Umbra Nihili, by Cluegirl # (the link goes to the epilogue; the previous chapters are linked from there; or here)
Sirius/Harry; NC-17, chaptered novella. Sirius finds himself trapped in a world of smoke and mirrors, to which Harry seems to have the only key.
Unrequited, by Underlucius #
Gen; PG; Snape-centric with some implied pairings; one-shot. Summary: “Snape lives a life of longing. For the Unrequited Love Challenge.”
Valley of the Shadow of Death, by Katerine NR
Pre-slash H/D (?), WIP (on hiatus). After a spell accident, Draco becomes a ‘Medium’ and is able to see other planes of existence - primarily ghosts who haven’t yet found their way back to our plane.
Vigil, by zahra (hackthis) ##
Harry/Draco; PG-13. I’m placing this story here because what and where exactly it all happens is not very clear from the context.
The Weight of History, by Rex Luscus
Snape/Salazar Slytherin; NC17, one-shot. Warnings: Extremely dubious consent, ghost!sex. Summary: A young Severus Snape takes a peek inside a mysterious room guarding one of the Dark Lord’s secrets.
When You Are Ready, by corvus_coronis (electromoon)
Gen, Harry, Pettigrew, Snape, PG-13+. Summary: Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it … as Wormtail finds when he comes to Harry asking for perks. Warnings: Mention of Best (non-graphic, Animagus), Mental torture (magical), Scat (animal, non-erotic), past character deaths. Challenges: for Round 1 of the thematic_hp - Forced Marriage or Bonding, Prompt #3: – “As time goes by, an unfulfilled life debt becomes a slave bond. The constraints of the life debt force Peter Pettigrew to become Harry Potter’s slave; to lose his magic and obey everything Harry says. However, even though Harry hates Peter, he has never been comfortable with slavery.” Snape lives as his book.

An awful lot of thanks to Isiscolo and Ntamara whose Five Times Beyond and Through The Veil post I used, and to all you guys for your help!

The Snape_after_DH fest will probably produce several entries for this list
Sansa’s ‘Life in Kind’ is well-worth a read. Harry resorts to painting Snape’s portrait himself as no one else well - and being Harry he doesn’t quite follow the instructions he’s been given …
Ten thousand words and an NC17 rating

Thank you!
Blowing my own horn here, but I wrote one that fits this category,
Dance Macabre
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3368440/1/Dance_Macabre
When Harry’s very last battle is over, he finds that he’s not quite done with Voldemort.
Thanks, Tom!
Ach, I’m mentioning another of my fics… I’m pretty sure it fits
Title: A May 2nd Carol
Link: http://attackfish.livejournal.com/
Alternate Link: http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1748
Summary: Summary: After Nagini bites him, Severus is visited by the spirits of the Marauders.
Pairings: Gen, some implied unrequited Snape/Lily
Notes: follows the basic plot of A Christmas Carol, James talks about what it’s like being dead and stuck in the afterlife. Complete, oneshot.
Thanks, attackfish!
I just love this list. You have most of my favorites and more. The only really fantastic one that you are missing is one of my favorites:
Grimoire of Baqer Hashim by Vera
www.goneamiss.org/vividly/grim.html
This story is why I fell in love with Ghost-Harry. After the final battle, Harry has disappeared, Ron is in a coma and Draco is a dark creature. The “grimoire” plot is inventive and original. Ron and Draco are wonderfully in-character. And Ghost-Harry is both charming and heartbreaking. NC-17. Ron/Draco, 51253 words. AU, post-war, mystery/drama, slash.
This is one of my all-time favorites. Vera rocks!
A Portrait of a Potions Master by nenyaentwhistle
Snape/Harry
In the Headmaster’s Office, a portrait of Severus Snape commissioned by Albus Dumbledore is discovered.
Portrait of a Headmaster
Harry/Draco
http://community.livejournal.com/hd_holidays/146556.html
When Death Eaters find their way into the Hogwarts portrait collection, the Headmaster is forced to work with the Head Auror to find a way to protect the castle, including their own children.
- Portrait!Snape
Master Work by mahaliem
Harry’s eighth-year at Hogwarts is going about as well as all the others. Someone is out to get him, Aurors keep questioning him about the final battle and, worst of all, Draco is determined to repay his life debt to Harry.
- Snape’s portrait is referenced to quite a bit in this one.
There are a few others too where Snape’s portrait plays a lesser role, Not in the Hands of Boys by fourth_rose (Snape’s portrait teaches potions and Harry and Draco work with him)… Catch Me If I Fall by alisanne all has Snape’s portrait teaching them potions… obviously, both of these fics are 8th year.
